About Us
Founded in 2015 by Philomina Kane '17 and Wilglory Tanjong '18, DoroBucci is Princeton's premier African dance company that seeks to educate the Princeton community at large about African culture through contemporary, rhythmic African dance. During her freshman year, Philomina Kane '17 was passionate about the possibility of an African dance team on campus. When she met Wilglory Tanjong '18, Philomina expressed her desire for more displays of African culture at Princeton. The two found that they shared the same vision and desire for such an entity. Thus the journey to form an African dance team ensued. While studying in Lewis library, they began brainstorming names for the new dance team. Suddenly, Mavins' Dorobucci started playing and both friends immediately started dancing. It was at that moment that the two decided they would name the team DoroBucci. After its official formation as a student group, Philomina and Wilglory were joined by Achille Tenkiang '17, Audrey Chebet '18, and Yaw Owusu-Boahen '17 to form the initial DoroSquad.
DoroBucci is animated by a community of dynamic, dedicated, and talented students from a broad range of cultural and creative backgrounds. As a group, DoroBucci is devoted to fostering knowledge and respect for the rich history and cultural heritage that narrates our performances.
Beyond producing our fully student-run shows twice per year, housed in Princeton’s Frist Theatre, DoroBucci often partners with other organizations and individuals to lead workshops and events that not only underscore the beauty and intricacy of dance but the importance of intercultural dialogue.
DoroBucci also hosts a biennial intercollegiate dance competition known as "Sakata." Sakata is a Swahili word that means “to dance,” and through this event, DoroBucci invites other collegiate African dance groups to help us share the beauty that is African dance with Princeton and the broader community.
DoroBucci takes great pride in being a performance-based group but our reputation as a close-knit family is not to be overlooked. When you join DoroBucci, you are joining a family that will inspire, motivate, uplift, and support you in all that you do. From our weekly "DoroBrunch" to impromptu company get-togethers, DoroBucci cultivates an enriching experience and empowering community for our members that lasts well beyond graduation.
